Pea-shaped indigo-blue flowers. Black seed pods in fall. Nebraska native that tolerates drought and poor soils.  You can use it's blue flowers to make blue dyes.

Care:
Baptisia has a large taproot. Difficult to distrub.  A large hoop support can help keep the plant uprights.  If you do not deadhead the flowers, you will get attractive seed pods similar to pea pods, which turn dark and rattle in the breeze.  Stalks will need to be trimmed off near ground level as winter sets in - or immediately in the spring before new growth begin.   Plant will be dormant (no leaves) late Fall through the winter months, this is normal. It will leaf out in spring

Fungus diseases such as leaf spot, powdery mildew, and rust can occur if grown in crowded, damp conditions.  Be sure to provide good air circulation around your Baptisia plants.
