The Garden
Name: Showy Goldenrod
Type: Solidago speciosa
Description:
Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun. Tolerates poor, dry soils. Pruning stem tips early in the season can result in goldenrod plants becoming fuller and bushier and lead to more flowers later in the season. Deadheading spent flower heads can prolong the bloom season well into fall. Removing the flower heads before they go to seed can prevent rampant self-seeding.  Low care, and trouble-free, spreads at a moderate rate from underground rhizomes.  Drought tolerant once established.

The flower can also be affected by rust fungus, powdery mildew, and leaf spot. May need to be divided every 2 to 3 years to control growth.  Attractive to bees and butterflies.
